Before You Do Anything Else

If You Smell Gas

If anyone is in danger, you see fire, or you cannot get out safely, call 911 first. Then call us.

  1. Get Everyone Out

Leave the building or the area immediately. Take everyone with you, including pets, and stay well away from it.

  2. Do Not Make a Spark

Do not touch light switches, appliances, thermostats or phones. Do not start a vehicle or use a flame.

  3. Shut Off the Gas

Only if you can reach the tank safely, turn the main supply valve clockwise to close it. Otherwise, leave it.

  4. Call 911

From a neighbor's phone or a mobile well away from the building, call 911 or your local fire department.

  5. Then Call Us

Once you are safely away and emergency services are on their way, call us so we can send a technician.

  6. Do Not Go Back

Stay out until emergency personnel or a qualified propane technician tells you it is safe to return.

The Other Emergency

If You Have Run Out of Propane

  1. Close the Tank Valve

Turn the main propane supply valve clockwise to close it. Then call us, and we'll refill your tank to get your house up and running again.

  2. Do Not Relight Anything

An empty propane storage tank puts out every pilot light. A qualified technician must perform a leak-test and relight the system first.

  3. Keep the Heat You Have

Stay warm with extra layers and blankets while you wait for us. Never use a grill, stove, or generator indoors for heat.

Never run outdoor equipment indoors to keep warm. Barbecues, camp stoves, patio heaters, and generators produce odorless carbon monoxide that is fatal when used in an enclosed space. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out and call 911.

Two Minutes

What You Can Check First

If you do not smell gas and there is no immediate danger, these four checks take a couple of minutes and often explain the problem. Every one is something to look at, not something to fix.

Your Tank Gauge

Lift the dome and read the dial. Below 10 percent is low, and zero means empty.

The Tank Valve

Make sure the main supply valve on the tank is fully open and not partly closed.

Your Thermostat

Confirm it is set to heat, above room temperature, and that its batteries are not dead.

Breaker and Switch

Check the furnace breaker has not tripped and the emergency shut off switch is not off.

If none of those explains it, call us. Do not attempt a repair yourself, and do not relight a pilot light.
